Literally 10 seconds into my commute had a Tahoe almost put me into a wall.

10 seconds.

Happy fuckin’ Tuesday. It’s the new Monday (and yesterday sucked already).

Kinja'd!!!

Some context:

The start to my commute is an on-ramp. I cross a street to get on the highway. The on-ramp is actually two on-ramps coming together and maintaining the two lanes until they combine with the highway. As such, you often end up side by side with someone in the opposite lane from you as you head along for about a mile before joining general traffic out of the city. In this case, a Tahoe was right on the ass of an M2 (ironic?) and got sick of being on said ass...swerving into me as our two lanes were coming together. Thankfully, I was able to swerve and brake hard (yay swapping to winter rubber this past weekend!) while leaning on the horn so say “hey fucktard, I’m right here!”

Not sure how I didn’t end up as a bright red sandwich between a rock and a hard place.

Dude proceeded to get behind me and highbeam until I giddy-upped on out. So, yeah...be aware of your surroundings and don’t just change lanes willy-nilly. Check your mirrors, at least, and be aware of the little blind spot indicator if you have it (he did).

I don’t get what makes car companies think that if a person doesn’t cheack their mirrors or over their shoulder in the first place that they’ll notice a blind spot monitor on it.

Maybe they’d check if we put blind spot monitors on their phones?

Nah...they’d just swipe away the notification. I feel like it’s instinctive.

Put their phone in lockdown until they look?

I think the same thing every time I see them. I mean, commercials make you think that there’s audio as well and having never driven a vehicle with these systems I can’t speak for it...but you can mute the nav lady, I’m sure alerts get muted as well.

Plus, they’d go off every 5 seconds because the little indicators flash whenever a vehicle is detected. Watching it on the highway is like flashing Christmas lights.

I’m on the fence with that gif.

That car on the right could have easily checked his mirror, saw no one, then signaled to change lanes, only to find the other car had moved after he looked.

In your case, YOU WERE THERE THE WHOLE TIME.

This is why I have a Stebel Nautilus horn. I like sharing my “hey fucktard, I’m right here” at 139db

The right car should have signalled before changing lanes, not AS HE’S CHANGING LANES!!!!!!!!!

Almost happened to me yesterday morning, too. Well, there was no wall, thankfully, but yeah, just just started moseying on over whilst I was next to him. I appreciated having a 5.0 V8 at that point.

So anyway, I’m in the far right lane, one of two lanes exiting onto another highway. This guy is in the left of the two lanes, the optional exit. We approach the exit, about a half mile away, and he puts his blinker on. Now, at this point, I’m approaching at ~10 MPH over his barely speed limit speed, on his right. There’s another car next to him, probably 10 car lengths between me at the car in front of me. I assume he wanted to change lanes, but as I approach, he never gets into the hole as the car in front of me changes lanes in front of him. I was prepared to go around, as it was clear behind him (really, or her, It was dark.) But they never moved. Not until I was right beside them, and even then, just kept coming over. Never once looked. So I hit the rumble strips, rode the shoulder, and accelerated past. They just kept coming over like they never noticed I was even there. Come on, my headlights are working, I know this for a fact. WTF, man/woman?

I hate people.

Yup...sounds about right. With two lane exits, too, the turn signal doesn’t always mean “going far right!” it just means “leaving the highway!”

I sent my buddy the location of where mine happened because he’s a civil engineer who works highways and he said, “must have been an asshole because there is nothing wrong with how that road is set up.”

Guy was an ass. Yours was oblivious. I can’t honestly say which one I would rather.

I’m with you. Left car was likely still in a blind spot the way it changed. Tough spot.

I’m not picking sides, I’m just sticking up for both of them.

Of course it could have been prevented, but it was an awkwardly synchronized situation.

There’s 4 vehicles in that gif and 3 of them made errors. Avoiding any one of them would have prevented the accident.

-dark car needs to gtfo of the left lane

-white car needs to be way more careful when switching to the center lane. I’m very cognizant of not changing into a lane in a way that puts you in the blind spot of the far lane - ESPECIALLY when the car is clearly closing on the vehicle in front of them

-grey car overreacted big time.

3 idiots that could have prevented and accident and didn’t.

Also, fuck the Tahoe in the OP story.

That (gif) happened to me two weeks ago at 90mph. I was going faster and ahead in the right lane, the guy in the left turned in without blinking.

He jerked into the lane while honking when he realized he was going to hit my rear to really make a point of it. I pulled a hard right and corrective left... Ever seen a Malibu three wheel? Well I have and it did it like a champ and held on.

Probably should take a full review of basic driving while they are learning to check their mirrors. Standard car control would have saved them.

And in 3 different directions, I believe. Driver could use a course in accident avoidance. A 10 degree flick to the right and recenter would have been enough...

Kinja'd!!!1

A 10 degree flick

Or a tap of the brakes for crying out loud. At those speeds, the left car would have flown right by.

Seriously, the lane you came from is still a safe place. Lift and tap the brakes, and slot right back in where you were before all the horn blowing.

No need to go full Mustang

The annoying part in that GIF is that the left lane camper ahead is like more than 50% responsible for the problem that occurred. Sure checking mirrors could have stopped that result but people not camping in the left lane would have never necessitated the right lane pass by the white car. It is one of those situations where 99% of the time, left lane campers are just a mild annoyance. But here is the 1% of the time where it creates an avoidable catastrophe.

Seriously. I have a 40+ mile daily commute on 3-4 lane interstate. I see some variation of this nearly every day, and have yet to see it result in an accident.

You NEVER go full Mustang.

The real problem is that the sliver Ford waaaay over corrected. If they had just slightly moved back into they’re lane they would have been fine.

I remember once switching lanes (after looking and signalling of course) to the center lane from the right lane, and as I did this the car in the left lane also started switching to the center lane, right next to me. We both immediately went back to our lanes, at the same time.

Synchronized accident-avoiding lane-switching should be an Olympic (motor)sport.

When conditions are right for this kind of thing, I sometimes sit there with my signal on for an additional 3-4 second before looking again.
